The Y Chromosome of Drosophila Pseudoobscura.

چکیده

The variation in the shape of the Y chromosome of Drosophila pseudoobscura Frolowa was first observed by LANCEFIELD (1929). He found that race A of this species has a J-shaped, and race B a V-shaped Y chromosome. This difference in the shape of the Y chromosome remains the only known “morphological” differential between the two races of this species, which are otherwise distinguished by their behavior in crosses (LANCEFIELD, 1. c.), and by a number of physiological characteristics (POULSON 1934, DOBZHANSKY 1935, BOCHE unpublished). DOBZHANSKY and BOCHE (1933) observed that the shape of the Y chromosome does not remain constant even within a race; two types of Y chromosomes occur in race A, and two other types in race B. Further studies, to be reported in the present paper, have increased the number of the types of Y chromosomes known in the species up to a t least six, and shown that each of these types occurs in populations inhabiting a distinct geographic area.

Translocation of Y-linked genes to the dot chromosome in Drosophila pseudoobscura.

One of the most striking cases of sex chromosome reorganization in Drosophila occurred in the lineage ancestral to Drosophila pseudoobscura, where there was a translocation of Y-linked genes to an autosome. These genes went from being present only in males, never recombining, and having an effective population size of 0.5N to a state of autosomal linkage, where they are passed through both sexe...

Genomic changes following the reversal of a Y chromosome to an autosome in Drosophila pseudoobscura

Robertsonian translocations resulting in fusions between sex chromosomes and autosomes shape karyotype evolution by creating new sex chromosomes from autosomes. These translocations can also reverse sex chromosomes back into autosomes, which is especially intriguing given the dramatic differences between autosomes and sex chromosomes. To study the genomic events following a Y chromosome reversa...

Origin and evolution of Y chromosomes: Drosophila tales.

Classically, Y chromosomes are thought to originate from X chromosomes through a process of degeneration and gene loss. Now, the availability of 12 Drosophila genomes provides an opportunity to study the origin and evolution of Y chromosomes in an informative phylogenetic context. Surprisingly, the majority of Drosophila Y-linked genes are recent acquisitions from autosomes and Y chromosome gen...

Molecular evolution of the Sex-Ratio inversion complex in Drosophila pseudoobscura: analysis of the Esterase-5 gene region.

The Sex-Ratio chromosome in Drosophila pseudoobscura is subject to meiotic drive. It is associated with a series of three nonoverlapping paracentric inversions on the right arm of the X chromosome. The esterase-5 gene region has been localized to section 23 within the subbasal inversion of the Sex-Ratio inversion complex, making esterase-5 a convenient locus for molecular evolutionary analyses ...
